Object Title

Tricolore Pin

Description

Pin, spelling "W Pio, L'Italia e A Dio" (Long live [Pope] Pius, Italy and to God). This object brings together the themes of military action, national pride, and religion. Pope Pius IX was crucial in the initial decades of the Risorgimento, as he supported more liberal reforms of the Church.

Epistemologically, that Italians would have been able to wear this openly indicates a sense of camaraderie and public belonging.
