Durante la rivoluzione del 1848 molte città italiane furono colpite da manifestazioni contro i padri della Compagnia di Gesù. Durante il Risorgimento, l’ostilità verso i Gesuiti fu diffusa fra i ceti intellettuali liberali.
La Compagnia era considerata un freno alle tendenze riformistiche della Chiesa Cattolica e sospettata di scoraggiare i sentimenti nazionalistici dei giovani, poiché essa deteneva un ruolo importante nel sistema educativo degli Stati pre-unitari italiani.

L’opinione negativa si diffuse più ampiamente fra la popolazione a causa della pubblicazione delle opere di Vincenzo Gioberti, specialmente nel caso de Il gesuita moderno (1846-47), e a causa della circolazione della falsa notizia che voleva i Gesuiti implicati in un complotto per reprimere la rivoluzione.

Il ciclo di dimostrazioni ebbe inizio il 4 gennaio 1848 a Genova, dove circa 500 giovani, seguiti da una folla estemporanea, si diressero nel centro della città imprecando contro la Compagnia. Dopo la promulgazione dello Statuto Albertino, nuove manifestazioni del tenore di quella di Genova si ebbero a Cagliari, ancora a Genova e poi a Torino, a Napoli (9-11 marzo) e a Roma (specialmente a marzo), mentre episodi minori ebbero luogo nelle piccole città. Le manifestazioni erano state precedute, nel 1847, da intimidazioni e minacce di violenza e portarono, fra febbraio e aprile del ’48, all’emanazione di provvedimenti di espulsione da parte dei governi degli Stati italiani.
La Sicilia fu l’unica regione dove non vi furono manifestazioni eclatanti contro i Gesuiti, perché qui essi prestarono un supporto materiale alla rivoluzione.

The bill describes the Jesuits’ precipitous escape from the Italian towns of Tivoli and Ferentino. The image represents a group of Jesuits driving a cart.

During the 1848 Revolution demonstrations against the Society of Jesus took place in many Italian cities. During the Risorgimento, Italian liberal intellectuals shared a feeling of hostility towards the Jesuits. They were thought to counter reformistic tendencies within the Roman Catholic Church and discourage the national feeling among young students, as they played an extensive role in the educational system of Italian pre-unitarian states.

This negative opinion spread among the broader population following the publication of Vincenzo Gioberti’s books – particularly Il Gesuita Moderno (1846-47) – and was also due to the circulation of a piece of fake news, implicating the Jesuits in a conspiracy to repress the Italian revolution.

Demonstrations started on 4 January 1848 in Genoa, where around 500 youngsters, followed by an impromptu crowd, headed towards the city centre cursing at the Jesuits. After the promulgation of the Albertine Statutes, similar demonstrations took place in Cagliari, once again in Genoa, in Turin, Naples (9-11 March) and Rome (March), while minor episodes occurred in smaller towns. Everywhere, demonstrations had been preceded, in 1847, by threats and intimations of violence, and eventually led to acts of exile issued by Italian pre-unitarian state governments between February and April 1848. In every city, mobilisations were triggered by the news of demonstrations taking place in other Italian or European cities, creating a domino effect.

Sicily was the only region without significant episodes against the Jesuits, which can be explained by the fact that on the island, unlike in the rest of Italy, the Jesuit order supported the revolution.
