The Christian Society
Image: The Virgin of Childbirth, Naples, 1848.

The Police officer who investigated the Christian Society attached the Virgin of Childbirth image to the police dossier he transmitted to King Ferdinand II of Bourbon. According to the officer, the image should have ʻdefendedʼ the king from the Christian Society, as the latter represented a threat both to his sovereignty and to religion.

The Christian Society was a secret society founded in the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies after the Neapolitan revolt of May 1848. According to its statute, it aimed at defending Christianity, educating the lower classes and increasing trust between the citizens and the Bourbon army. From a political point of view, its purpose was 'the liberation of the country,ʼ which could be interpreted both as fighting for the independence and the unification of Italy or as emancipating the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies from the absolutist yoke.

The Christian Society combined the principles and methods of various political cultures and traditions of mobilisation. The sect resorted to religion in order to involve the masses and recruit them for the society itself. At the same time, as in the case of the 'Carboneria,ʼ the Christian Society was a secret and hierarchical organisation, based on the education and the spiritual development of the individual. The oath of new members also resembled 'Carboneria', as they had to swear in holding the Christian cross and a dagger in their hands. Moreover, the statutes of the society compelled its members to assist each other and each other’s families both materially and morally, including with medical care and funerals. This revealed that Neapolitan liberals had an increasing awareness of social problems, which they thought they could solve – not unlike Mazzinian thought and the utopian socialist tradition – through the principle of mutual assistance.
