Dieu l’a vu. Translation

At a mournful day in Lyon. THE WOMAN. We have no money to bury our dead. The priest is there, setting the price of the funeral; And the bodies are stretched out, pierced by grapeshot, Awaiting a shroud, a cross, remorse. The Murderer becomes king. The victor whistles and passes on. Where is he going ? To the treasury, to be paid for blood he shed. He shed plenty! but his hand is not tired: It has, without fighting, slaughtered passers by. God saw it. God picked each soul like a perishing flower. The Women, the children, who assended to heaven. The Men ... there, up to their eyes in blood. The air could not carry up so many enraged souls. They do not want to leave their dead. The priest is there, setting the price of the funeral; And the bodies stretched out, pierced by grapeshot, Awaiting a shroud, a cross, remorse. The living know not where to go. A sentry rooted, in the middle of the road, Death is a soldier who takes aim and takes away. The rebel witness who will speak tomorrow ... THE WOMEN. Take our black ribbons, weep all our tears; We have been forbidden to take away our dead: They have made only a heap of their pale remains: God ! Bless them all, they were all unarmed!
